| DS-160 digital photo Square JPEG from 600x600 to 1200x1200 pixels, 240 kB or less, 24-bit colour in sRGB, compression ratio 20:1 or less. The source does not say whether KB/MB mean 1000 or 1024 bytes; the stored bytes are the stricter reading of each bound. | 240 KB max 1200×1200 px, at least 600×600 px, aspect 1:1, formats: JPEG | — | Official source |
| DV entry photo (DV-2026 instructions) Per the latest published instructions (DV-2026): JPEG, square, 600x600 pixels, 240 kB or less. A scanned print must be 2x2 inches scanned at 300 pixels per inch. Re-verify when the DV-2027 instructions are published. How it works
- Choose a photo — JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC.
- Adjust the crop frame if the target needs a fixed shape.
- The tool searches for the best quality that fits the size and pixel requirements.
- Download the result. Location and camera data (EXIF) are removed.
Didn’t fit? What to do
- Check pixels, not only kB: the image must be square, between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels. This tool always outputs 600×600.
- Save as JPEG. Other formats are not accepted.
- Do not squeeze the file too hard: the State Department asks for a compression ratio of 20:1 or less. For a 600×600 colour image that means at least 54,000 bytes, so the tool keeps the file above 54 kB. If the photo compresses smaller, the tool pads it with a JPEG comment: that meets a byte-count check, but the picture itself stays as compressed as before.
- Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance. The tool only crops, resizes and compresses.
Frequently asked questions
What size must a DS-160 photo be?
A square JPEG of at least 600×600 and at most 1200×1200 pixels, 240 kB or smaller, in 24-bit colour (sRGB).
Can I upload a 1200×1200 photo?
Yes. 1200×1200 is the maximum the rules allow. This tool outputs 600×600, the size the State Department photo tool crops to.
Why was my photo rejected if it is under 240 kB?
The upload also checks the pixel size and the square shape. A 4:3 phone photo or a 2000×2000 image fails even when the file is small.
Can I scan a printed photo?
Yes. The print must be 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), scanned at 300 pixels per inch, then resized to fit the digital rules.
